چکیده

Electron tunneling through self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols is investigated. Temperature-dependent current– voltage measurements are performed to distinguish between di erent conduction mechanisms. Temperature-independent electron transport is observed, proving direct tunneling as the dominant conduction mechanism of alkanethiols. An exponential dependence of tunneling current on molecule length is observed. Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy results are reported. ? 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Enhanced infrared absorption spectra of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers using the extraordinary infrared transmission of metallic arrays of subwavelength apertures.

The surface-plasmon-mediated, extraordinary transmission of metallic arrays of subwavelength apertures has been used as the light source for absorption studies of self-assembled monolayers on metal. Enhanced infrared absorption spectra of a sequence of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers on copper were recorded for carbon chain lengths varying from 8 to 18 atoms. Transition positions and inte...

Effect of Alkanethiol Functionalization on Surface Reactivity in Catalytic Sensors

Introduction The interaction of organic adsorbates is known to play a significant role in a large number of chemical reactions[1], yet the catalytic systems that exploit these effects on a fundamental level to improve selectivity are lacking. Alkanethiols represent a possible platform for the modification of catalytic surfaces through their ability to form well ordered monolayers on the surface...

Studies of Surface Coverage and Orientation of DNA Molecules Immobilized onto Preformed Alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers

DNA molecules are attached onto carboxylate-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) preformed at gold surfaces via the N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide (NHS)/1-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)-3ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) cross-linking reaction. Cyclic voltammetry, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to probe the surface coverage and molecu...

Microcontact Printing With Octadecanethiol

We investigate various alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer inks for microcontact printing patterns on gold substrates. Our research compares hexadecanethiol with an alkanethiol of higher molecular weight, octadecanethiol. Transport mechanisms of alkanethiols along the gold surface and through the ambient are highly dependant upon the molecular weight of the thiols used, and thus are of particu...

Cross-platform characterization of electron tunneling in molecular self-assembled monolayers

Electron tunneling is investigated for the alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed using three different device structures spanning from the nanometer to the micrometer scale. The measured current–voltage characteristics for the alkanethiol SAMs can be explained by the classical metal–insulator–metal tunneling model and the tunneling current exhibits overall exponential trend on the...
